As an author, professor, and social activist,

bell hooks was many things during her lifetime, and a trailblazer for Black women in feminist spaces that had primarily been for white women. She discussed race and gender in new ways that helped people expand their preconceived notions of the obstacles that women face, specifically Black women. hooks also wrote extensively about how race and gender intersect with class and the negative effects of capitalism.

In her lifetime, hooks wrote around 40 works including collections of essays, poetry, and children’s books. As an academic, she published numerous scholarly articles and worked at a number of universities and colleges, including Stanford University, Yale University, the City College of New York, and Berea College. bell hooks passed away this past December at the age of 69.
