An adward-winning actress for the entirety of her seven decades long career,

Cicely Tyson was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her acting as Rebecca Morgan in Sounder, and she further garnered acclaim for her role in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and How to Get Away WIth Murder, the latter for which she was nominated for five Emmy awards. In addition to her screen career, Tyson appeared in various theater productions. She received a Vernon Rice Award in 1962 for her Off-Broadway performance in Moon on a Rainbow Shawl. Tyson also starred as Carrie Watts in the Broadway play The Trip to Bountiful, winning the Tony Award, the Outer Critics Award, and the Drama Desk Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2013. Tyson was named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2015. She received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

She grew up in Harlem, the daughter of immigrants, and when asked how she wanted to be remembered, she said,  "I've done my best. That's all."
