The first black woman to travel to space,

Mae Jemison made history in 1992, after years of incredible achievement in academics and activism. Jemison is a doctor and engineer, having majored in chemical engineering, African and African-American studies, and earning a medical degree. She was a doctor in the Peace Corps and joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1987. She was the head of the Black Students Union at Stanford, and after her career with NASA, she served on the board of directors for the World Sickle Cell Foundation. She has written a number of books and is also a talented dancer.
