The St. Louis American is the largest weekly newspaper in the state. In the 1980s, Dr. Donald M. Suggs took over the American, dramatically increasing its circulation and making it free. The American has won over 100 awards in journalism and was designated “Newspaper of the Year” by the Local Media Association in 2015, and Dr. Suggs was named “Publisher of the Year” by the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
